The Università per Stranieri di Perugia is the oldest and most prestigious Italian institution as far as research and teaching of Italian as a second language is concerned. Its certificates have been issued since 1987 and it is the first Italian institution to operate in the certification of Italian as L2.
Certifying the knowledge of the Italian language is an institutional activity for the Università per Stranieri di Perugia.
The Centre for language Evaluation and Certification (Centro per la Valutazione e la Certificazione linguistica - CVCL) is responsible for the processing, production and issue of the CELI certificates for standard Italian, and it is constantly undergoing a process of research and development to guarantee high quality standards in relation to candidates' needs.
In terms of practical knowledge, language theory and teaching methodology, the Università per Stranieri di Perugia language certificates are tightly linked to the Common European Framework (CEFR) for Modern Languages of the Council of Europe.
The CELI certificates have been taken worldwide since 1993. As of today almost 82,000 candidates have taken these exams.
