TKT Exam: 26th May 2012

Course cost: € 250

Exam cost: € 48,50

What is TKT?

The Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) is a test from Cambridge ESOL about teaching English to speakers of other languages. It aims to increase teachers' confidence and enhance job prospects by focusing on the core teaching knowledge needed by teachers of primary, secondary or adult learners, anywhere in the world.

Click here for further information (Cambridge ESOL website).

The TKT is divided in three modules.

It is possible to follow a course to prepare for each TKT module

Courses for TKT preparation

TKT courses last 10 weeks with 2 hours once a week. Each course leads to thorough understanding of each TKT module.

Exams will take place in Palermo. The course will be conducted in English and is aimed at ‘scuola media’ and ‘scuola superiore’ teachers of at least B1 level of English already working in, or contemplating a career in ELT.

Each session will be led by an experienced teacher trainer and will cover the basic concepts and terminology needed to teach English and to take the TKT test, a paper-based multiple choice exam lasting 80 minutes. The actual test will take place within a short time after the end of the course.

MODULE 1 - 2012

Among the areas covered in Module 1 there are:

  • Concepts and terminology for describing language i.e. grammar, lexis, phonology and functions
  • Concepts and terminology for describing language skills and subskills, i.e. reading for gist, scanning, etc.
  • Factors in the language learning process, such as motivation, exposure to language and focus on form, the role of error, differences between L1 and L2 learning
  • learner characteristics i.e. learning styles, learning strategies, maturity, past language learning experience, learner needs
  • Presentation techniques and introductory activities
  • Language practice activities
  • Assessment types and tasks

Although there is no observed teaching practice component, the course will be of a very practical nature, illustrated with examples from current course materials, and participants will be regularly encouraged to reflect on their own teaching and try out techniques for themselves in the contexts they currently work in.
